Riparian Planting

Bringing back natural habitats

Planting trees around and along waterways helps reduce nutrient run-off from farms to improve water quality in the streams and tributaries which flow into our main rivers such as the Waikato River.  Planting hillsides and waterways also helps mitigate flooding and erosion from an increasing number of high rainfall events.

Planting wetlands have benefits including reducing the impacts of flooding by absorbing heavy rain and releasing the water gradually. Wetlands can also help support great concentrations of bird life and far more species than a similar forested area.

Establishing planting projects often includes clearing the land of pest weeds such as blackberry and gorse.
